Starting a blog is something very exciting and because of this excitement, many new bloggers make blunders that eventually lead to the failure of their blogs.
Below are some of the most common mistakes newbie bloggers often make that you can avoid.
1. Lack of originality
If you create the content by yourself, try as much as possible to be original. Never copy content from other blogs and post on yours. In fact, it’s called plagiarism.
Always create your original content from scratch.
2. Choose a niche and Stick to it
If you write about Technology today, tomorrow you write about politics, and the other day you write about fashion, you will notice that no one visits your blog or comments on your posts. Don’t ask WHY?
It’s because people don’t really know what your blog is about.
Sticking to one niche will allow you to focus your energy and time and also boost your blog traffic and grow your audience.
3. Lack of Consistency
Many newbie blogs take weeks and months to update their blogs. However, don’t take ages to update your blog. Always update your blog regularly with fresh content.
At least add 2-5 posts per week will do.
4. Forgetting to plan for your posts.
Don’t just post because you feel you should post something. Apart from the topics you scheduled to post right away, always plan for your next posts at least 2-3 days in advance.
This will give you enough time to research, edit, amend and proofread them.
5. Avoid writing misleading headlines
Do not write misleading headlines that don’t actually match the content in the body. Headlines that clickbait your readers will leave them stranded and eventually increase your blog’s bounce rate.
When your blog’s bounce rate is high, its reputation is compromised.
6. Lack of Organization
Keep yourself organized as much as possible. You should have a “To Do” list of topics you plan to write about, when you will write them and when you will publish them. Have a physical planner on standby so you can visually see what you are required to do.
7. Do not ignore Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
If you need lots of organic traffic for your blog, you need to organize your content in such a way that you write for your readers then optimize the content for search engines. Hence before writing any post, you should first do adequate research.
Find out which topics are trending (that people are searching for) in your niche and which specific keywords are ranking high for similar topics. This will allow your content to appear on search results when relevant searches are performed on search engines.
8. Write and Publish Only Facts
Do not post fake information just to trick your audience to click on your links. The moment your audience realizes that you are feeding them with false information, they will leave your blog and never return.
9. Not having an Email List from Start
Start building an email list from day one. This is one of the greatest marketing strategies for your blog. I recommend MailChimp for building an email list.
Email List will allow you to reach as many people as soon as possible
10. Writing very short posts
Don’t write short articles. Posts that rank in the first 10 positions of the search engine results page are usually lengthy with over 2000 words. An average post should be at least 1000 words maximum and about 750 words minimum. Endeavor to write long-form actionable content that benefits your target audience.
11. Not making your blog user friendly.
Ensure that your blog is well designed, cross-device responsive, and easy to navigate (i.e. for phones, tablets, laptops, etc.) People normally avoid sites that are not responsive because it’s difficult for them to use them.
In a similar way, always ensure that your content is correctly formatted. A bad blog can hurt your credibility and reputation.
- For your blog to become successful, you need patience and perseverance.
It’s very common to make mistakes here and there especially when you’re just starting out. With the tips above, we hope that you will make informed decisions throughout your blogging journey and see your blog prosper. Thanks for loving Milasona!
