How to Prepare for an Exam

If there is any burden that a student has to carry, it’s the stress of examinations. The ultimate goal of any level of education is to examine or test the student on the class material.

So the struggle for success is determined through sittings called the Examinations.

Now students are of various categories. Some attend the lectures or classes from day one. Others get activated in the middle of the semester and some are part-timers.

However, Examinations are prepared on equal grounds regardless of which category you fall in.

In this article, we shall help you prepare adequately for any exams that you face in the course of your semester.

1. Make readable Summaries

Many students enjoy reading without knowing whether they are retaining the information or not until they enter the examination and all the answers go on a trip.

Making summaries while reading and reviewing them will allow you to retain the information you read and improves your comprehension speed.

Make summaries in a way that even if you visit them after the examinations, you can still be confident that it stuck in your head.

Summaries are usually bulleted or outlined points.

2. Ask Questions in Class

During the course of attendance of lectures or lessons, be keen to understand the topic and ask questions where necessary.

Only selfish and shy students run after the lecturer after the lesson to ask questions.

You will understand better when you participate more in class.

3. Group Discussions

Although group discussions are helpful, it can become a burden where the group number is large to make up a class. An effective discussion group should be up to 5 members.

There should also be a balance between the discussants in that everybody can equally contribute to the success of the group.

4. Befriend a smart Student

Having an academic friend is very important. Such a friend can save you whenever it comes to coursework or academic-related issues. Take note, I don’t mean cheating or performing malpractice.

Smart students are focused and are always ahead of their game in class. Do you have a smart student in your class? Befriend one today.

5. Know the Course Outline

At the beginning of every semester, the lectures always begin with an overview of the entire topics you are to cover for the semester.

Take note of the course outline to help you in case of research and staying ahead during the course of the semester.

6. Use past papers for Revision

If you know the phrase that history repeats itself, then you must be knowing this concept. Questions are often repeated and therefore if you’re a person who visits question papers, there is no doubt that you will excel.

Question papers contain possible examination questions likely to be asked.

7. Don’t skim when reading

The bad habit most students have is skimming through the book without actually visualizing or analyzing the content.

A prepared student goes through every nook and cranny of the book in that if any question gets twisted, they know how to tackle it.

8. Know your strengths and weaknesses

Everyone is human to error. You can’t be perfect in all aspects. You have strengths and weaknesses. The earlier you discover your strengths and weaknesses, the better.

Knowing them allows you to focus more on your weaknesses and better yourself.

9. Consult with your tutor or lecturer

Just as I earlier said, some students run after the lecture at the end of the lecture. In this case, am not talking about them. Here I mean you have been attending but you misunderstood something or need to make a consultation to understand something better.

Consultations allow you to detect errors and get clarified explanations to questions that could be disturbing you.

10. Research using the internet

Researchers are quick learners. Thanks to the internet, today you can browse on Google or YouTube and receive a complete guide or lesson on the topic you want to learn.

Be it auditing or financial accounting, all will work in your favor so long as you’re connected to the internet.

It’s very difficult to forget something that you thoroughly researched.

11. Read as early as possible

The most critical step of reading is usually the step when you go through fresh content you have never read or even attended their lectures. You will need to concentrate harder to grasp the content.

However, if you don’t wish to be completely green about the topics you’re reading, you should consider attending lectures, and then you read through the whole course that was taught in bits.

12. Read using Past Exam Papers

If you want to really excel, you need to use old examination papers as a point of reference and understand how the questions are asked. It’s a very helpful tool for smart reading.

You will read the entire book in no time when you use this approach

13. Master Calculations and illustrations

The biggest challenge most students face is usually calculations and illustrations and yet they are one of the most examined areas.

A student who is not good at calculations and illustrations will need to spend hours and understand the concept in order to be able to excel in their examinations.

In summary, the opinions outlined here are based on personal indulgence. Be considerate and share with us how you prepare for your exams.
