7 Tips to Choosing a Good Domain Name

In this article, I will be sharing with you a few tips on how to choose a good domain name for your website/blog. Don’t get discouraged if your domain doesn’t fulfill all the mentioned traits.

Personally, my blog is a long afar from some tips I will be sharing with you here.

Let’s get in class…

1. Choose a short name

When choosing your domain name, it’s recommended that you look for a short name between 5 – 15 characters long. This is because it’s easier to memorize and type compared to the longer ones.

Have you ever wondered why domains that are short are always premium domains? This is because they are easy to remember and can drive large volumes of traffic to a business/blog.

2. Choose a domain with a .com extension

If you’re able to purchase a domain with the .com extension, I say go for it.  This is because of their popularity. Many people think of .com whenever they want to visit a website/blog.

However, there are hundreds of other extensions you can choose from, for example, .net, .ssd, etc.

3. Never use symbols in your domain name

It’s not wise to use symbols on your domain. Symbols include hyphens, hashtags, slash. This is because it will make it very hard to be remembered and difficult to be typed on mobile devices.

Always use plain domains

4. Don’t include a brand name in your domain

It’s not advisable to include a brand name in your domain.  This is because people may mistake the true intention of your website given that the brand is already established.

Examples of brand names in your domain include; ZAINtips.com

5. Your domain should be easy to spell

Your domain should not be difficult to spell for most people. This will make them strain their mind every time they want to visit your blog/website trying to remember your domain name and eventually give up.

Choose a name that is easy to remember and spell correctly

6. Do not use numbers in your domain name.

Don’t include numbers in your domain. This is because numbers make it very difficult to express your domain name to someone verbally. It’s difficult to tell someone that your blog, Number…..

7. Choose a name that can be easily branded

Choose a name that you can easily brand. Attractive and short names can be easily branded for promotion and in due process, large volumes of traffic are attracted to your blog/website.

In fact domains with the same features mentioned above can be easily branded.

Note:

  • A domain with very good keywords can help your site rank higher on search engines like Google.
  • Register a domain name that matches your brand name (for example, yourbrandname.com). It prevents other people from registering your brand name.

Conclusion

I can’t emphasize enough, that don’t get discouraged in case your domain doesn’t fulfill all the above-mentioned traits. These are just some of the things you should have at the back of your mind while thinking about choosing your domain name.

You only have to make your domain name meet a few of the characteristics. Feel free to share your ideas and thoughts with us in the comment section.
